Barber Cutting Hair

We’re currently looking for a hairdressing volunteer.

Location: Musselburgh

The people we support have many challenges to face, one of the being low self-esteem.  A haircut can have a great effect on someone, giving them a real boost.  We are looking for community minded hairdressers or barbers to come and cut our supported people’s hair in our services. Through the act of giving a haircut, you will build a connection with our supported people, offering a time and place in which they are not defined by their circumstance; they are seen, heard and valued without judgement.

We’re currently looking for a SMART Recovery volunteer.

SMART Recovery Facilitators are part of an amazing network of volunteers. They see remarkable changes in many of the people who attend meetings and know that although recovery is an individual’s choice and responsibility, as a SMART Recovery Facilitator they have been able to help and make a difference.

In just a few months, Facilitators can learn enough to run good SMART Recovery meetings, though the process of honing skills and deepening knowledge can go on for many years or even decades.

FAQs

Why should I volunteer?

Volunteering is a fantastic way to give back to your community and it is incredibly rewarding – but it isn’t just about doing good. Giving your time through volunteering can help you develop new skills, boost your confidence, give you a chance to meet new people and open up new career opportunities. It can also make you really feel like part of something – especially at Blue Triangle where we consider our volunteers as one of the team.

Who can volunteer?

At Blue Triangle, we believe that everyone can play a role in our organisation and should have the chance to participate. We are continuously looking at developing volunteer opportunities to reflect this.

We value and seek to involve supported people or people with relevant life experience who want to help others on their recovery journey.

How much time?

Whether you’ve only a few hours to spare or can make a longer commitment, there will be a valuable part for you to play.

Do I need experience?

You may not realise it, but you already have a lot you could contribute, even if you have not previously worked or volunteered. Many of our opportunities simply require a friendly attitude and a little bit of time, and they are also a fantastic way of gaining skills and experience in an area that interest you.

Will I receive training?

To ensure you get the best possible experience, we provide an induction and full training for your volunteer opportunity when you start. This will include taster sessions, an Onboarding day and any relevant training for your volunteer opportunity.

Will I get support if I have a disability?

At Blue Triangle we believe that having a physical or learning disability shouldn’t prevent anyone from volunteering.  As a person who is disabled or lives with a mental or physical health condition you can expect a welcoming and inclusive environment. We will work with you to provide the support and equipment you need to enable you to complete the application process, complete any relevant training and fulfil your volunteer role.

Will I need a background check?

Our volunteers are required to go through a PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) check through Disclosure Scotland.

I have a criminal record – can I still apply?

If you have a criminal record you can still volunteer in most roles, depending on your offences. You will need an enhanced PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) check if you want to volunteer with young people or vulnerable adults.

Will volunteering affect my benefits?

If you’re receiving benefits you can volunteer for as many hours as you want as long as you continue to meet the rules/conditions of receiving that benefit.

I am a refugee/asylum seeker, can I volunteer?

If you’ve applied for refugee status or humanitarian protection (asylum seekers) you can volunteer in the voluntary sector. This includes if you are appealing against a decision where you’ve been refused asylum.

Will volunteering cost me anything?

When you give your time to Blue Triangle, we are truly grateful and we believe it’s important to make sure that you’re not out-of-pocket for doing so. Blue Triangle reimburses travel expense in line with our Expenses policy.
